Blog Entries: July 2023

Nothing too exciting to report on the design front.

I managed to get a lot of work done in my house and car, plus lots of laundry.

Best of the Known World - IN PROGRESS

I made a good amount of progress into the scroll.  I drew in a lot of the figures, and I'm now nearing that point where all I have to do is add the ink.  I'm on the fence about whether or not I should fully illustrate the bottom panel.  This is A LOT of work.

Pennsic Packing

Might as well check with the National Weather Service because it looks like a tornado has torn through my living room.

Just kidding.

This is me prepping my living room for Pennsic.  I have almost everything done for packing, it just needs to go into the bags.  I still have to get the car clean and the oil changed before heading out.

Currently debating on how big of a scribal kit I should bring with me to Pennsic.

June 29, 2023

I had a rather eventful night.  I finished all of Good Omens 2 with my husband.  I definitely wasn't prepared for that ending.  I also managed to put in a good, solid effort into finishing my work.

Japanese Scroll - COMPLETED

I finally finished this scroll.  I originally thought that I had lost the words for the scroll, so I contacted my wordsmith for additional words.  It turned out that I had stuffed the words into an art book.

I contacted my favorite Japanese translator to help me translate the words, and I finished the scroll wording.  Overall, I'm happy with how this project turned out.

Best of the Known World - In Progress

So alright, I'm pushing the deadline for this scroll back!  I really should be finished with it and paint should be applied.  I hope that I can finish the illustrations today and then work on finishing up the inking.

July 27, 2023

I finally got back home from work.  I'll be home for a few days, then back to work before heading to Pennsic 50.  In the meantime, I have a massive 'to-do' list to work through before I get there:

Then all the other mundane tasks, like prepping and getting a whole care ready for a long trip.

I came home to find this lovely shirt sitting in my mailbox.  It was lovingly made by the caring hands of my Meemaw of Defense.  I very rarely have clothes that were actually made for me.  This was one of the few things that I've actually had custom-made for me.

For those who have limited exposure to the SCA hierarchical structure, the masters of defense are one of the four highest levels of recognition one can obtain in the Society.  The term 'meemaw' is an affectionate word used for grandparents, namely grandmothers.  My Meemaw of Defense was the mentor to my current mentor.

Master of Defense Scroll

In honor of the 1 year anniversary of her elevation to the Masters of Defense, I have prepared this special page to chronicle the journey of making her scroll.  Click here to read all about the work I did on Caroline's Master of Defense Scroll.

I got a new shirt!

A brand new shirt arrived for me made out of linen.  It has brass buttons and armpit reinforcement for fencing.  So far, it's really lightweight and breathes beautifully.

Sneak peek at my collar project

I'm just applying some finishing touches to another project to go along with my Indenture scroll.  This is a etudiente (student) collar that I'm making for my brother.  It's made out of leather, wool, linen thread, and brass letters.  It features embroidered trees and a medallion that depicts our mentor's personal insignia/device.

I'll probably write a tutorial on this at a later time.  For now, it's just a teaser picture.

At long last, I've finally gone off and designed my own website for my art.  It's been a long process, but I finally managed to find the motivation to do it.  This was more daunting than I thought.  I also purchased my own domain to showcase my art and all the projects that I'm working on.

I managed to finish my indenture scroll earlier today and the documentation to match it.  You can find more information about it here: Making an Indenture

I'm also in the process of adding my previous works to my gallery and adding documentation to go with it.  This will be a time-consuming process because I'll have to go through each piece to see what I have already written for it.

Current Project: Japanese Scroll

This is definitely a new format for me as I try to create a scroll on black paper.  So far, I'm really liking this effect.  I can't wait to see what it will look like when it's finished.
